Frequently Asked Questions

Good questions, honest answers.

A few of the things people often wonder before reaching out. If your question isn't here, you're always welcome to ask through the client portal.

Getting Started
I've never talked to anyone. Isn't reaching out a sign of weakness?
Not at all. People who ask for help know themselves well enough to know when they need it, and that takes real strength. You already have strengths that have carried you before; sometimes a season feels heavy enough that they're hard to reach. Together, we'll identify those strengths and put them to work again.
What's the difference between therapy and talking to a friend?
A good friend can listen, but a therapist is trained to help you approach things in a new way, learn skills, gain perspective, and listen to yourself without judgment or expectation. Therapy is also completely confidential, so you never have to worry about it affecting a relationship later.
How does it work? What happens in sessions?
Every person comes in with different goals, so there's no single script. I tailor the work to you. Much of your growth also happens between sessions, in the small things you practice in everyday life.
How long will therapy take?
It depends on you, your goals, your commitment, and what brought you in. I'll never keep you longer than is helpful; the aim is meaningful change at a pace that feels right.
Trauma & EMDR
What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an extensively researched, evidence-based therapy for trauma. It uses gentle bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess stuck or distressing memories so they lose their charge and stop intruding on the present.
Does healing from trauma mean reliving it?
No. You don't have to retell your story over and over to be free of it. Using approaches like ART and EMDR, we help your brain reprocess what happened so it no longer feels raw, often more gently and quickly than people expect.
Who do you work with?
Cristina specializes in supporting women and trauma survivors, including work with survivors of abuse and trafficking, and leads recovery groups for women. We see adults individually, in person in Winter Park and across the Orlando area, or by telehealth anywhere in Florida.
Why not just take medication?
Medication can treat symptoms and is sometimes a helpful part of care, but on its own it doesn't address the root. Our work together explores what's underneath and builds skills that create lasting change. We're glad to coordinate with a prescriber when medication is part of your plan.
Logistics
Do you take insurance?
All sessions are self-pay, and we're not currently on insurance panels. A superbill is available on request if you'd like to seek out-of-network reimbursement. Paying privately without submitting a superbill keeps insurance out of your care; submitting one shares the included billing and diagnosis information with your insurer. See rates & insurance for details.
What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt for therapy services that includes information such as service and diagnosis codes. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you may submit it to request reimbursement. Coverage is not guaranteed, so it’s best to ask your insurer about your benefits first. Read SimplePractice’s guide to superbills.
What are your rates?
$185 for a 50-minute session and $370 for a double session. We accept Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover, and HSA & FSA cards through the secure portal.
Do you offer telehealth?
Yes. Secure, private video sessions are available to clients anywhere in Florida, so you can do this work from wherever you feel most comfortable.
What's your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans sometimes change. Please provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice are considered late cancellations, and the full session fee will be due.
Do you work with couples?
Our focus is individual therapy. If you're looking for couples work, we're happy to refer you to a counselor who specializes in marriage and relationship therapy.
