Services/Sand Tray
Sand TrayA gentle, hands-on way in for adults, offered in person at the Winter Park office and serving the greater Orlando area.
Some things are hard to explain. You can describe what happened clearly, in order, with all the right words, and still walk out carrying exactly what you walked in with. If that's been your experience, I understand, and sand tray might be another way in.
I offer sand tray to adults, as part of individual counseling. It reaches the same things talking does, by a different route.
It can help if you've told your story many times, clearly and calmly, and never felt it move. It can help if you go analytical under pressure and notice you're narrating your feelings instead of feeling them. Some people get more articulate under stress, until being articulate becomes its own kind of distance, and building a scene lets you skip the explanation and go straight to the thing itself.
It's also a gentle way in for something that started before you had words for it, for a decision or relationship that won't resolve on paper, and for a loss that feels bigger than any sentence. And some people would simply rather build something than describe it.
You don't need any experience with art or crafts. If you can set an object down in sand, you can do this.
Sand tray is a gentle, hands-on form of expressive therapy. There's a shallow tray of sand and a shelf of small objects: figures, animals, buildings, bridges, trees, ordinary things and strange ones. You choose what goes in the tray and where it goes.
What you build becomes something we look at together. Nothing is graded, nothing has to be pretty, and there's no correct arrangement. I won't tell you what your scene means. We work that out between us, talking it through as we go.
A sand tray session is a regular individual session that happens to include the tray. We talk first, the way we would anyway, and when it seems useful, you build. Some people work quietly for a long stretch and some talk the whole way through. Both are fine.
Afterward we look at what's there and talk about it, and that conversation often goes somewhere new. The tray is yours to leave as it is or change.
You're never required to use the tray. It's one tool in the room, offered when it fits, and you can say no any time without explaining.
Trauma can damage the connection between an experience and the words for it, which is part of why retelling a story so often doesn't shift it. Some clients carry trauma from before they could put things into words, called preverbal trauma, and that's often when I reach for expressive arts.
I use sand tray alongside the structured protocols in trauma recovery, including EMDR. I also use it in everyday individual therapy when nothing traumatic is in view at all.
I'm Cristina, and I'm the owner of Flourish. I'm passionate about using expressive arts in healing, because creativity reaches parts of experience that words have a hard time getting to. Sand tray belongs to a wider family of expressive work, like drawing, painting, image, and metaphor. In all of it, the making comes first, and the conversation afterward builds on it. It's fine to be curious and skeptical at the same time. Bring both, and we'll find out together whether the tray is a good way in for you.
